Oil and Ash on Plexiglass, 2019
Showed at The Other Art Fair BKLYN Fall 2019
6 x 4 ft.
Bright light reflects from the cool pinks, sky/sea temperatures, and saturations of color that bleed across this expanse of plexiglas. These friendly, youthful tones cover vast and cold layers of blue and white, which only reveal themselves upon closer inspection, allowing the painting’s material surface to belie the conversations underneath until a certain contemplative attention is applied. The primordial, placental suggestions from the movements of the surface pigments are further activated by the introduction of aggressive textures that push the implicative possibilities within the work further and further from Earth. Terrestrial elements such as dried paint specks from previously finished works and the ash burned from cannabis joints smoked during the painting process serve as practical, symbolic points of departure that allow the piece to skyrocket into simultaneously cosmic and introspective realms of understanding.
