A painting that chooses to hide its light amidst a supple, earthy, wine-red warmth, acidic with hints of Bordeaux. Aside from the underlying southern french influence, the implied atmosphere of the piece presents as impressionistic as it is abstract; the ideas inherent in the messy, experiential brushstroke that Cezanne introduced give way to moments inspired by Rothko’s turpentine-thinned, urban-induced layering; and again, this seemingly manic meeting of mind and technique finds a primal home in the textures of paint itself, from Sean Scully painting stripes on aluminum all the way back to the our ancestors who painted animals on cave walls. Though specks of portalistic light shine through, the dominant washes of deeply valued overtones and touches of gold accentuate an ominous timbre that gives way, over time, to something unsuspectingly more inviting, more reminiscent of home, and suggestive of a bygone era.
